There are two factors, which must be present when running a small business regardless of the industry.  These two elements are consistency and quality.  Here is a closer look at how these are the main contributors to operating a successful business.

Quality

Consumers return to a business if the pricing for the quality of the service and/or goods is on point.  Offer the best quality in comparison to others in the market.  If you run a restaurant and use the highest quality of ingredients in your food, then set the pricing in relation to it.  Perhaps your specialty is homemade lasagna with the finest cheeses from local dairy farmers.  Set the menu pricing accordingly.

Consistency

Be consistent in the service and/or product you provide customers.  If the quality is high, then maintain this level of excellence throughout.  For instance, if your company believes in outstanding customer service, hire employees that exemplify this stance.  You want the consistency of the customer service to shine throughout.  This way if a customer contacts you, receives a great customer service experience, calls back another time, then the same experience will be imitated, regardless of who the consumer reaches in your company.

Dump the Sales Attitude

When you are going to network with other colleagues and business owners, think about connecting with as many people as you can without selling to them directly.  You are not going to make sales to these people.  However, they may be connected to your target market without you realizing it.

For instance, if you are a kitchen cabinet distributor and attend a local interior designer association meeting it is not because you are going to sell directly to the members.  You are going to talk about your product in hopes one of the interior designers has clients who will purchase your product.  You are not in the mindset to sell, sell, sell.  You are thinking about how to make connections ensuring sales will be made down the line.

Follow-Up Regularly

Once you make these connections, do not drop the ball.  Stay in touch with these people.  Send follow up emails.  Visit an interior designer’s office you met during your networking event and bring breakfast or sweets for afternoon snacks.  Keep reminding them that you exist.  Food is an effective way of attaining this goal.

Avoid Negative Comments

Your boss hears complaints nonstop from those below and higher than him/her.  Therefore, when your boss delegates a task to you reply with, “No problem.”  It resonates positively with your boss.  Your boss does not want to hear any excuses.  Zip it if a negative reply is about to form.  Stay positive.  You would be surprised how having an upbeat attitude towards work changes your boss’s perspective about your position in the company.

It also proves you are paying attention to the company issues, and instead of replying with a shrug of the shoulders and replying with, “I don’t know,” you are presenting solutions.

Office equipment, vendors, and/or accounting software are needed to run a company.  If you deal with any service or product costing money, research various prices and show the cheapest route to your boss.  Every small business is worried about the economy, going out of business, and frightened of falling into a financial crisis. As a result, businesses are looking to cut costs where possible.  Hence, if you find a cheaper and effective means delivering the same options, your boss will take notice.
